New face of The China Bird

When Hookline started we were going to be very democratic - not only would readers choose the novels for publication but they would be consulted on the book cover. This, sadly dear readers, was a mistake.
Book covers send very subtle messages to readers - we know from the colours (pastel or bold), imagery (defined or ethereal) and even the font (serif or non) whether this book is likely to satisfy our needs.
The young book designer who designed us with The China Bird wanted to create a memorable work of art - and so did we. Hence the bold, soaring bird on the black cover. Readers loved the fact that it was slightly avant garde with no hint of 'domestic' for female readers.
Sadly, Waterstones felt it was too Gothic to appeal to women readers. I argued my point that women selected the cover, but... Waterstones are experts in covers, and I, dear reader, saw it as Gothic forever more.
Hence our new, bright cover for The China Bird. Byrony Doran's story is untouched.
We hope you like it.
